We believe that spinal cord and traumatic injury patients DO have options and there is evidence to prove that significant recovery IS achievable. Every day, individuals are doing things they were told were not possible. They have decreased pain, depression, and muscle spasms and increased balance, posture, mobility, and independence. People are able to leave their wheelchairs and walk again and thus some do.
For over 30 years, Peter Lathrop and our team have been developing and continuously improving or sharpening our capstone ACCELERATE Recovery Program to help clients affected by traumatic neuromuscular injuries, including paralysis/spinal cord injury, to regain sensory and motor functions to the end of more independence and freedom.
Functional neuromuscular recovery is a 24 hour a day, seven day a week process. We believe to positively influence it full support is needed that matches the process. We are more than a facility and 3-4 times a week of exercise.
This daily, home-based program taps into your body’s natural ability to heal itself, and the neuroplasticity (adaptability) of your nervous system through a fully-integrated approach. This approach combines neurophysiology and consistent neural repatterning, neuro-psychology and a focus on high performance mindset, mind-body awareness, intentional exercise, along with healing the gut and optimizing nutrition. Our mission is to help you or your loved one defy the odds of recovery if you have determined that is YOUR mission.
The five elements of the ACCELERATE Approach
1. Tapping the Power of Your Mind and the Mind-Body Connection
Your mind and your brain play a key role in physical recovery after such a traumatic injury. Grit and self-mastery are essential. We teach a combination of hypnosis, neuro-linguistic programming and regenerative visualization techniques during 1:1 meetings that you then use daily. We guide your journey using the best of neuroscience-based coaching and mentoring. The neuro-recovery journey is a marathon not a sprint. Our education, mentoring and coaching is delivered from a mind-brain perspective.
2. Clean Heal and Seal Your Gut & Optimize Nutrition
Great health starts with your gut health as your gut is your second brain. It has its own branch of the nervous system built right into its walls and calls its own tune. It’s intimately connected to your microbiome and its 70-80% of your immune system. We assess the state of your gut and microbiome and its effect on your health so you can adapt and upgrade your lifestyle choices (food, hydration, meds, supplementation, etc) to maximize your overall neur0-recovery. The goal is to make your body conducive to healing from within. Most people have a “leaky gut” and are not getting enough of the nutrients from the food they eat, “quality” food or not. As well, you have taken antibiotics which deplete your microbiome. Gut health and food as medicine is a key focus for our clients. Further details of this focus are outlined here in the IGNITE Program.
3. Regenerative Electromedicine
State of the art electrotherapy devices reduce pain and inflammation and stimulate the body’s own natural nervous system functions. The nervous system has the ability to reorganize itself by forming new connections throughout its life. This ability is called neuroplasticity.
4. Intentional Neuromuscular Exercise
We place a focus on “intentional” neuro-recovery exercise, creating custom neural re-patterning exercise plans that evolve as your mobility and function improves. The techniques we use are designed to target activation of the neuromuscular system below the level of spinal cord injury. When executed in conjunction with#1-3 above you are retraining the nervous system to recover specific gross and fine motor skills. Targeted, intensive, consistently repetitive physical exercise activity has been shown to improve function and health outcomes. When you get to the point of gait training you may use a walker, parallel bars or walk with assistance on a treadmill wearing a harness like this client.
5. Environmental Adjustments & Influencing Team Dynamics
Our staff members work 1:1 with you to assess living and working environments often times coming into your home before or after your boot camp. The goal is to assure you can confidently execute the program elements as well as provide recommendations that help you create a life that fosters positive change, progress and independence. We care about your success and teach important aspects of successful care-giving team dynamics. Our secondary goal is that your family wins as well as you! Many put their lives on hold, understandably so, when you were injured. They too get to recover and reclaim their lives as some point on this journey – yes? You with us there? Great.
How Does It Come Together as a Program For You
No two people or injuries are alike so a neuro-recovery program with the above elements is designed for you, with your unique needs and situation in mind. A complete assessment is done up front to determine the requirements and look at delivery options.
Some times a couple of elements get started first rather than implementing all at once. And when executed all at once it generally begins with a period of immersion – what we call a boot camp or intensive. This takes place either in San Diego, CA where are team and facilities are located or it happens in your home territory. Yes, sometimes one or more of our team has to come to a client instead of them coming to us. Many factors go into the decision we make WITH you. The immersion length of time varies from a minimum of a week to longer. There are knowledge and skills to master in this phase. Here is a preview of the gym space we utilize for the neuro-exercise portions of the boot camp.
AFTER boot camp or immersion, on an ongoing basis over multiple months we communicate, teach, mentor and coach via all types of technology that is available today – Skype, Zoom, video, audio, online coaching platforms, etc.
We decide together how often we see each other in person.
Are you a Candidate?
Have you experienced a spinal cord injury or paralysis? Have you been told, “There is nothing more you can do?” Is your internal voice telling you there IS something more you can do, you want to do, you believe is possible? Are you willing to dedicate your physical and mental energy to making a life-changing recovery?
Then let’s talk. There is no way to know until we get much better acquainted!
Every individual presents a unique set of challenges and goals, which is why we offer FREE Educational Consultations to determine if you (or a loved one) are a candidate for the ACCELERATE Spinal Cord Recovery Program.
Becoming informed about your condition and recovery options is extremely important in producing great outcomes so all along the way you will receive valuable knowledge as well. Schedule your free call!
